Carol Hegedus, the owner/artist of Handmade Tile Studio, specializes in creating handcrafted tiles that are inspired by nature -- in the shape of birds, flowers, leaves, insects, etc. Each mosaic style art tile is hand-cut from soft, high-fire clay. Then it is dried, glazed with brilliant colors and fired in a kiln up to four times. The tiles are of the highest quality and artisanship and each is one-of-a-kind. Due to the nature of handmade ceramics, slight variations in size, color, or accents add to the charm of each piece. All of the tiles are 3/16th inch thick and are weather tolerant. Recently, I've been making 'skinny' tiles that are about 1/8th inch thick for use with glass mosaics or to cover handmade structural surfaces that aren't flat.
My decorative art tiles lend themselves to an endless variety of possibilities. They can be used to create colorful mosaic murals and also I also sell individual tiles to other mosaic artists.
Due to the COVID19 Pandemic, my studio is not open for visitors. However, I am willing to mail tiles to you if you know specifically what you want and are willing to pay the postage. Please send an email with a list of tiles (color, facing right or left, etc.). --- you must be very specific for me to know what to send you! I am willing to text photos to you if necessary.
At this point, I'm planning on resuming classes and opening my studio on October 1, 2024. My mosaics can currently be found at Desert Artisans Gallery at 6536 E. Tanque Verde, Tucson. They are opened from 11-4 Tuesday-Saturday or by appointment.
